Freedom Haulers Initiative to Recruit Veterans to Truck Driving
First warriors in combat, then warriors of the road.
The second Trump Administration is working with six large trucking stakeholders to launch what it called the Freedom Haulers Initiative, to help military veterans transition to a stable trucking career by reducing obstacles that might otherwise get in their way.

The six stakeholders in question are five trucking businesses, plus the American Trucking Associations:
- Werner Enterprises
- United Parcel Service (UPS)
- American Trucking Associations (ATA)
- Schneider
- J.B. Hunt
- Stevens Transport
Plans that the Freedom Haulers Initiative entails include:
- Veterans Affairs paying for trucking school via the GI Bill and the Veterans Readiness and Employment program.
- The Department of Labor using its Employment Navigator and Partnership Program to provide career assistance on military bases, including and beyond trucking.
- The Department of War’s SkillBridge program allowing service members to spend part of their last 180 days in service to train for returning to the normal workforce.
- The five trucking carriers above pledging to hire more veteran drivers, including Werner Enterprises planning to hire 1,400 by 2027.
“American Trucking Associations has long supported initiatives to help more veterans launch rewarding, good-paying careers in the trucking industry,” ATA President Chris Spear said in a statement. “That’s why we were proud to participate in the launch of Freedom Haulers at the White House.”
Conclusion
Of course, Trump being the bombastic executive that he is, he could not help but make a quick jab in regards to his other political goals, including English enforcement.
“For many years, American highways and roadways have been terrorized by unqualified illegal aliens dangerously driving big rigs,” Trump said. “As we get illegal aliens off the roads today, we’re also taking action to replace these unqualified migrant truck drivers with highly qualified American veterans.”
Trump believes that replacing each revoked CDL with a veteran obtaining his or her CDL will prevent current truck drivers’ wages from becoming stagnated as a result of an increased talent pool. Provided that the veterans pass all the required CDL training that operating a big rig entails, we are all for it!
