If you have been in the trucking industry for any amount of time, you have likely heard of the “trucker shortage”, the idea that there are not enough commercial drivers on the road to fulfill the transportation needs of the nation. It goes without saying that if this is the case, then surely having more truckers would help alleviate it, but the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) does not want to solve the trucker shortage by letting just anyone get behind the wheel of a big rig.
Contracts are an important part of society that keeps things going even when the unpredictable happens. This is why the California Air Resources Board (CARB) is unhappy with a set of four truck manufacturers who agreed to the “Clean Truck Partnership” in 2023 and have now, with a new presidential administration, given hints that they are planning on reneging on the deal.
In a cable interview with Fox News, Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Sean Duffy says that he is turning the screws even further on the trucking industry in regards to enforcing English proficiency as a rule of the road. First, it was going after the truck drivers themselves. Then, it was going after the states that enabled them. Now, the DOT is going one step further by holding shippers accountable if they willingly enter into a contract involving a driver who is not proficient at English.
