California Highway Patrol to Test Fog Removal Technology
The Federal Highway Administration estimates that 38,000 crashes and 600 deaths each year are attributable to one natural weather condition: fog. Man’s journey to control the elements continues as the California Highway Patrol (CHP), California Department of Transportation (CalTrans), and a company called Rain Enhancement Technologies (RET) set out a plan to artificially remove the fog in the West Sacramento area, with implications nationwide should the results be positive.
Details
West Sacramento has what is generally known as “Tule fog”, a pattern of fog so predictable that they have a name for it specifically. RET wants to change that, or at least minimize it, with the power of its Fog Removal by Electrical Activity system.
The short version of the technology is that it uses low amounts of electricity to magnetize the fog and separate it, creating clear skies ahead.
“If you think about the same technology relative to fog, fog is basically zillions of molecules, so it helps those come together, get bigger, and then drop such that it clears out a line of sight,” Randy Seidl, CEO of RET, said.
The system is currently set to be able to attempt to dissipate 360-square miles of fog in the region. Currently, the project is in its infancy so it will be a while before we see any results.
Conclusion
In the best-case scenario, this could revolutionize the world of road travel, both for big rigs and 4-wheelers alike. As stated before, the Federal Highway Administration estimates that 38,000 crashes and 600 deaths per year are attributable to fog plaguing the sight of drivers, so ionizing the water particles to clear the way can be an investment that saves tens of millions of dollars and numerous lives every single year were it to be provided nationwide.
Because the project has only just finished negotiating the contract between the business entity and the governmental organization, it may take some time before the fog mitigation system is in place, but we hope it gets done as soon as possible, as this is the season when the Tule fog really sets in!
