Department of Transportation Provides Disaster Repair Funds to 34 States
We are entering the season where, to quote a famous Christmas song, “the weather outside is frightful.” While humanity does not have the power to control the weather just yet, it does have the ability to make repairs to infrastructure that has been weathered by natural causes. To that end, the federal government, through the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT), is granting funding to thirty-four different states to provide support for road and bridge repair after natural disasters.
Details
Hurricane Ian, Helene, Milton, and Rafael are just a few storms in the past few years that have caused devastation to the nation’s systems. USDOT Secretary Sean Duffy is using taxpayer dollars in one of the few ways that has bipartisan support: infrastructure repair.
“USDOT is working diligently to deliver dollars needed to rebuild critical transportation and infrastructure links across American communities impacted by catastrophic natural disasters. Safe roads and bridges means rescue services arrive faster, medical professionals can reach those in need, and families can get the resources they need to recover,” he said in a statement.
In total, USDOT is releasing approximately $1.6 billion in federal funding to thirty-four states and additional territories, including:
- Arkansas
- California
- Connecticut
- Florida
- Georgia
- Guam
- Hawaii
- Idaho
- Kentucky
- Maryland
- Michigan
- Mississippi
- Missouri
- Montanda
- New York
- North Carolina
- North Dakota
- Northern Marina Islands

Conclusion
As typical of federal funding, USDOT is giving the funds to each member state and territory and having them carry out the logistics of the repair.
“The Federal Highway Administration’s work with states along with local, tribal, and federal agencies in the aftermath of disaster is essential to restoring broken transportation links,” said FHWA Administrator Sean McMaster. “We provide the necessary funding to restore mobility and help people regain a sense of normalcy in their daily lives following disruption.”
The biggest “winner” appears to be North Carolina; receiving over $855 million of repair dollars, it is obtaining more than half of all distributed funds in order to restore a sense of normalcy after Hurricane Helen, which ravaged the state approximately two years ago. Considering 2026 was a fairly calm hurricane season, now is the perfect time to grab a shovel!
