National Retail Federation Predicts First-Ever Trillion Dollar Holiday Season
One trillion dollars. It is one thousand billions, or one million millions. One billion is already difficult for the human brain to comprehend in its totality, what chances does it have of comprehending one thousand of them? It turns out, the National Retail Federation (NRF) expects spending in the upcoming holiday season to surpass this round number in 2026.
Details
It seems that for most years, each holiday season is bigger than the last, partly due to a slow rise from inflation, as well as pure consumer demand. NRF predicts a year-over-year growth of 4.2%, pushing the number to $1.01 trillion, and past thirteen digits.
“We continue to be very impressed with the resilience that consumers have demonstrated,” NRF President Matthew Shay told reporters during a press call in anticipation of the upcoming holiday season. “We expect that strength to carry into our November-December holiday period even as households continue to navigate persistent inflation and uneven confidence about the economy.”
Contrary to what might be expected with the rising cost of diesel fuel and other forms of transportation beyond trucking, the NRF expects a 50-50 split between inflation and rising consumer demand for 2026.
“Despite inflationary pressure, we expect goods prices to run lower than headline inflation as retailers respond to price-conscious consumers,” Mark Mathews, chief economist at the NRF said. “Our expectation is that, of our holiday forecasted 4.2% growth, nearly half of that will result from real consumer spending.”
Conclusion
While some of this trillion-dollar pie will no doubt be the result of downloadable and intangible goods such as entertainment software, a majority of it will still be physical, and need to be moved from point A to point B. With trucking still remaining the undisputed champion of physical transportation, and the supply of truckers contracting due to rising safety standards at truck driving schools, now may be the best time in recorded history to be a safe and responsible driver, as thousands of companies compete to get their products on the shelves and onto porches in time for Christmas and beyond.
