Port of Los Angeles Sees Second-Busiest July
The maritime and trucking industry are linked together, as one brings drayage containers onto and off of the boat. Any news about increased activity at port would be a boon to the trucking industry, which is why we are happy to report that according to the Port of Los Angeles’ numbers.
Details
The nation’s busiest land-to-sea processing station saw approximately 499,552 20-foot containers imported, 111,776 exported containers, and 349,137 empty containers all processed in July. Totaling to 960,465 containers, this is a net decrease from July 2025 by 8%, but still the second-highest ever reported in history. Though the port has more imports than exports, it appears to be processing empty containers at a sufficient pace, perhaps in part to a fee of $100 per day should they remain stationary, not unlike what New York and New Jersey implemented five years later.
There are numerous explanations for why the number processed would be high but not record breaking, as trouble in the Strait of Hormuz and increased traffic at the Panama Canal make it a bit harder for all the boats to make it to their destinations in a timely manner.
Conclusion
This data corroborates other data in the trucking industry that we have covered that shows that the trucking industry continues to drive strong despite any political and economic headwinds it may face. Considering how well it managed to survive the COVID-19 pandemic it is hardly a surprise that this is the case.
The National Retail Federation estimates that import volumes will decline towards the end of the year, which at first may appear to contradict the fact that consumer spending tends to go into hyperdrive for the holiday season, but the truth is that companies shipping from across the ocean are already planning for the holiday season of 2026, well ahead of when they actually happen. When containers have to cross thousands of miles and overcome potentially unforeseen events such as traffic at the Panama Canal, it is a good idea to be ahead of the curve rather than behind it.
