Mesilla Valley Transportation Implements Scanning Inspections
When it comes to being a trucker, the least fun aspect of the job is waiting. Traffic, emptying the cargo, and waiting at inspection and weigh stations really adds up. One company, Mesilla Valley Transportation (MVT), wants to streamline at least one of those, allowing a system of scanners to analyze a truck as it slowly drives through and reduces inspection time dramatically.
Details
Imagine at the airport every single person had to go through a manual pat-down rather than an x-ray scan. A process that already takes far too much time would take even longer. MVT wants to apply similar logic to the x-ray scans performed by the TSA to trucks by using scanners provided by tech company UVeye. The truck travels through the scanner at five miles per hour and the machine uses AI technology to inspect the vehicle for unusual wear and tear, as well as other things that may cause inspectors to scratch their heads.
Before, MVT used multiple manual inspectors to examine each truck, but the scanning technology allows repairmen to know exactly what to look for when it comes to vital repairs. MVT’s president, Royal Jones, says that the AI technology is not replacing the jobs of the repairmen but instead allowing them to spend less time searching and more time repairing.
“It’s not going to take away any jobs,” Jones said. “It’s going to give the guys that were doing that more time now to go find something that we already know is broken, fix it, and get the truck out of the shop that much faster.”
Conclusion
If this innovation expands to the greater trucking industry, it could have amazing implications. If a traveling inspection normally takes an hour on the road but can be reduced to ten minutes apiece, the lines waiting at weigh and inspection stations will barely exist anymore, allowing truckers to fly through the stations and carry on with their journeys, eliminating one of the many sections of patience a driver has to entail, so that they can spend less time waiting and more time driving! We will have to see what happens.
