FMCSA Has Closed Over 10,000 Truck Driver Schools
Last month we wrote about how the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) had closed 110 trucking schools in one fell swoop, but how many have the FMCSA closed down since the second Trump Administration started? The answer is in the title: five digits.
Details
Under the Trump Administration (second term), the FMCSA has been taking a magnifying glass to trucking schools across the countries in pursuit of finding that they are following all federal regulations and applying the hammer if they are not, in wake of recent major truck crashes happening that are the result of what President Trump and FMCSA Administrator Derek Barrs says is the result of poor policy on behalf of these trucking schools. While the previously mentioned 110 trucking schools were closed due to lax English enforcement, the entire total spans the entire gauntlet of potential regulatory violations.
A spokesperson from the FMCSA says that one of the leading contributors to the recent closures are “bad actors” arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, who opened up shop when the federal government was too busy with a lingering viral issue to place training providers under the microscope that they should have been.
With the FMCSA closing approximately 10,000 schools and having 31,000 listed on their database, that suggests that the second Trump Administration has closed about 24.4% of all trucking schools in the nation.
Conclusion
If you are already in the trucking industry and have a proven safety record, this is great news. Fewer training providers means fewer CDLs entering the trucking workforce, creating a supply-and-demand equilibrium that favors the trucker. While there are a multitude of factors that explain why current per-mile rates are at their all-time high, the dwindling of potential competition is no doubt a major factor. Combine this with the previous Supreme Court ruling of Montgomery v. Caribe Transport II, LLC and it means that customers for the trucking industry are paying a high premium for safety, something you can get behind if you and your fleet also put safety first.
