Trump Administration Closes 110 Trucking Schools
Would you like to get your CDL online? Sounds absurd, but there exist online trucking schools, which are among the list in the latest crackdown from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) on trucking schools in the name of safety.

The FMCSA announced that 110 commercial truck driving schools that they said are responsible for 5,000 truckers who failed English proficiency tests have been given notices.
“A lot of the licenses unlawfully issued come from California, New York, a lot from Illinois,” said Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. “We see a lot of the violations when trucks are pulled over in the Midwest because they travel through the Midwest, and so though a license might be issued unlawfully in California, that driver doesn’t stay in California.”
Despite Duffy’s politically charged rhetoric in mentioning California, Illinois, and New York by name, the shutdowns of CDL centers are distributed nationwide regardless of a state’s political affiliation. For example, shutdown notices totaled 11 in California, 13 in Texas, smaller amounts in less populated states, and even some that are online.
The news comes hot off the heels of President Trump signing an Executive Order requiring commercial truckers to prove that they are proficient in English, and the FMCSA estimating the cost of enforcing English proficiency requirements.

This ultimately raises the barrier of entry to get into the trucking industry as a driver or fleet owner, but means that those with a higher capacity for safety are likely to be paid more per mile as a direct result of supply and demand economics. With all of this being done in the name of safety, it is imperative that drivers be on their best behavior when traveling on the road as they operate 80,000-pound machines traveling above 50 MPH. That is a lot of energy to expel in a crash.
