ATRI Collects Data on Driver-Facing Cameras
When it comes to the trucking industry (especially after the recent Supreme Court case ruling 9-0 that brokers are liable for carrier collisions leading to a higher importance placed on safety ratings), it is imperative to be able to cover yourself in case things go horribly wrong. One such method of doing so is having driver-facing cameras to prove that the driver was acting on his best behavior so as to clear him or her from liability. Because it also has privacy implications, the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) wants to ask: do the benefits of driver-facing cameras cause so much benefit as to justify their inclusion on every truck?
Details
The data ATRI is trying to collect is simple: a one-year time period before and a one-year time period after a fleet has had its trucks have 98% or more inclusion of driver facing cameras, to see if the knowledge that a driver’s actions are being recorded leads to greater safety results.
If your fleet fits this criteria, you can enter your data on the ATRI’s survey webpage. Questions include not only tracking crashes/collisions, but other safety hazards that could increase the odds of such an accident happening one day, such as speeding or hours-of-service violations. Additional questions also ask what other safety features, such as speed limiters, are used in the fleet so as to control for those forms of technology and better measure the effect driver-facing cameras have on fleet safety outcomes.
Conclusion
Because the ATRI is not a governmental organization and has no enforcement authority, this data will not be the end-all be-all for potential future requirements for driver-facing cameras. However, the ATRI’s research results when brought to light can still influence laws and regulations through events such as congressional hearings, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out once the survey is completed.
If you are interested in participating and fulfill the criteria of having 98% or more of your fleet equipped with driver-facing cameras, be sure to do so before July 24th, 2026, as that is when the survey closes and the folks over at ATRI will start performing their number crunching.
