BUILD America 250 Act Would Provide Infrastructure Funding
The United States of America is rapidly approaching its 250th year of existence, and one of the nation’s greatest marvels is its over 4 million miles of road. One bipartisan use of taxpayer money is to repair and improve the nation’s roadways. Add this all together and what do you get? The BUILD America 250 Act earmarking $580 billion for surface transportation.
Details
The Building Unrivaled Infrastructure and Long-term Development for America’s 250th Act (BUILD America 250 ACT) would authorize the use of over half a trillion dollars in spending to improve America’s roadways, a system that consistently receives a D rating according to the American Society of Civil Engineers.
One of the biggest things that would impact truckers specifically is the implementation of grants for projects that would improve the truck parking crisis in the United States, where truck parking spots are outnumbered by trucks on the road at ten-to-one.
“The highway bill has always been a bipartisan product, and it is encouraging to see Republicans and Democrats coming together prior to the Sept. 30 deadline to expand truck parking, enforce safety rules and take additional steps that will strengthen our industry,” ATA President Chris Spear said in response to the BUILD America 250 Act. “ATA is committed to being a constructive partner throughout the legislative process.”
Other things included in the Bill, which spans over 1,000 pages, includes expanding access to bathrooms for truckers, expanding the apprenticeship program to recruit drivers under 21 into the career, and formally establishing national safety standards for autonomous trucks, because although their implementation is still well over a decade away, any steps of implementation will need to be done with the highest safety standards in mind.
Conclusion
While this Bill would normally be a bipartisan no-brainer due to roads being an uncontentious issue affecting every American either directly or indirectly, Congress is more divided than ever before, and a gridlock powered entirely by spite is still possible. We will have to wait and see what happens, but fingers crossed that this Bill finally becomes the reprieve truckers need to get proper parking.
