Bluewire Works with DOT to Provide Safety Ratings
Since the case of Montgomery V. Caribe Transport II, LLC ruled that brokers can be held liable for hiring less-than-stellar hauling companies, a new problem has presented itself: the sheer number of trucking companies makes it difficult to qualify them all, with an estimated 90% of trucking companies currently not having a rating at all. To that end, the Department of Transportation (DOT) is hiring a business intelligence firm Bluewire, to use artificial intelligence to analyze past driving behavior and provide ratings.
Details
The simple truth of the matter is that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) does not have the resources to check every single trucking company in the United States, with there being millions upon millions of them. To that end, the DOT has hired Bluewire and its predictive modeling to process large numbers of companies in a shorter amount of time, so that brokers, now holding some liability for accidents, can make better-educated decisions.
“This work is focused on tackling fraud and cabotage while advancing a broader, data-driven framework to better understand—and ultimately rate—every motor carrier operating under DOT authority. No more unrated carriers,” Steve Bryan, CEO of BlueWire, said in a statement.
Conclusion
Steve Bryan of BlueWire says that the company is working on the predictive model until the end of September 2026, upon which the DOT will employ it to give safety ratings across the nation. Even with a predictive modeling system speeding up the process, it will still take time to analyze the millions of trucking companies that fill the nation’s roads, and that is not even considering the time for the appeals process that the FMCSA and DOT will allow for truckers, especially when the rating is determined through AI and may occasionally be prone to error.
Regardless, Bryan still seems happy with the federal government finally taking steps to improve safety and provide ratings for the little guy.
“I’m proud of what our team has built and grateful to collaborate with partners who are equally committed to improving safety, transparency, and decision-making across the system. In my 19 years serving the trucking industry, this is the most important work I’ve been involved in. We see you fraudsters and bad actors, your days are numbered.”
