DOT Secretary Sean Duffy Awards $62 Million for Truck Parking
Another truck parking story for the month of July. The current Department of Transportation under President Donald Trump seems to be kicking it into high gear, as it announced $1.73 billion in federal grants for 127 infrastructure projects, with $62 million of it going towards parking in five states.
Details
The five states that are getting trucking parking funding from this announcement are:
- Illinois
- Kentucky
- Louisiana
- Mississippi
- Wyoming
The projects include an increase to the number of parking spots at various sites that are already established, but also other indirect quality-of-life changes that make accessing parking spots easier, such as information billboards that will post the number of open spots at a rest stop so that in the worst case scenario where the parking lot is full, a trucker can continue searching elsewhere instead of crawling their truck through the parking lot fruitlessly.
“The impact of these dollars will be felt in communities nationwide for years to come,” Duffy said.
Beyond the parking funding, 77% of the funding ($1.3 billion) will be going to road and bridge repairs, a much needed improvement considering the American Civil Society of Engineers gives the USA’s roads a D+ rating.
Other funding goes towards reducing bottlenecks at ports and better aviation infrastructure through improving roads at airports.
Conclusion
American Trucking Associations’ CEO and President Chris Spear lauded the announcement as one step closer along the thousand-mile journey to getting ample truck parking across the nation. He also acknowledged that there is still a lot of distance to travel, and that truckers will need the help of Congress to further close that gap.
“We appreciate Secretary Duffy’s commitment to addressing this long-standing problem,” Spear said in his statement. “When drivers finish their shift, they deserve to know that they will be able to find a safe place to sleep that night. Congress can help build on this investment by approving the $200 million for truck parking included in this year’s appropriations bill.”
