FMCSA Announces Another Five Removed ELDs
Back in the olden days, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) would simply remove Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) without telling anyone and then would cite drivers and trucking companies for using an out-of-date ELD. We like to think that we were a part of the recent changes of announcing updates publicly when we first wrote about the phenomenon, but we cannot say for sure. Regardless, the FMCSA has announced five more ELDs that are going the way of the dodobird.
Details
The ELDs in question are:
- Moonlight ELD
- HGRS ELD
- Highest ELD
- TruckFord ELD
- Sparkle ELD
The removals from the list happened August 6th, meaning drivers and fleet operators have until October 6th to get them replaced, while using paper logs in the meantime. Drivers using the ELDs or paper logs after October 6th will be considered as good as driving without an ELD at all. This is not the first time that the FMCSA has removed ELDs, and likely will not be the last, so there is a pretty good chance that you know the drill by now.
Conclusion
We like to think we were partially responsible for the FMCSA becoming more transparent with its ELD revocation process, so we would like to propose another change: making the ELD removals periodical: bigger but less often. After all, a driver could have had a Dynamic ELD in January, then replaced it with an Action ELD, followed by replacing that with a Moonlight ELD, and needing to switch ELDs three times in a single year.
As it stands there are approximately 950 valid ELDs on the market, so while the odds of getting a bad streak of ELDs is unlikely when an average of seven are removed each quarter, it is still very much possible. Rolling revocations into a twice-in-a-year event would be a relatively easy way to prevent nightmare scenarios of needing to switch ELDs every three months if a driver or company finds itself to be very unlucky. We can only hope to conjure the same magic we were able to do in 2020 and convince them of such!
