August 2026 Truck Sales Bigger than 2025, Less than July 2026
When something is great for so long, the notion of simply being “good” may come as a shock to some. In previous articles describing trucking sales for 2026, we have used terms such as “skyrocket” and “run-up” as the trucking industry was having a party. Now that the refreshments have diminished and the party is starting to wind down, there is still fun to be had, but not to the same extent.
Details
ACT Research pins the number of Class 8 truck sales for August 2026 to be 16,800 and FTR estimates it at 18,200. Both of these are an increase year-over-year (31% and 42% respectively) but a decrease from July (35% and 19% respectively).
An increase of 30% in a year is remarkable on its own, but compared to the estimated 231% increase that June 2026 saw compared to its 2025 counterpart, it can feel rather small. Do you see the glass as half-empty or as half-full?
“Overall, August marks the close of the 2026 order season and the effective end of the EPA 2027 NOx pre-buy,” says Dan Moyer, FTR senior analyst of commercial vehicles. “September begins a new phase with MY 2027 ordering opening and fleet decisions increasingly shaped by engine choice, pricing, build timing and the yet-to-be-finalized EPA 2027 NOx compliance framework.”
Furthermore, as Moyer hinted at, things are about to get interesting for the 2027 production year as NOx regulations begin taking effect, with the Environmental Protection Agency hesitant to rollback NOx requirements established during the Biden Administration.
Conclusion
Part of the recent explosion in truck sales can be attributed to the grandfather of trucks produced and sold before the new NOx requirements: people jumping in line to get engines that are sophisticated but not requiring so much design improvement as to reduce NOx pollution to 0.035 g/hp-hr. We will be able to see just how much influence the EPA has over the trucking industry in the upcoming months as the NOx requirements go into effect and the trucking sales numbers change.
