Trucking Job Numbers Steady for May 2021
Tracking the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) job numbers as they update is quite the task. Every month, they not only post preliminary data for the month that has passed, but also update previous months without saying what the prior estimates were, requiring researching back in time. With all of this in mind, from the first estimates in April to the first estimates in May 2021, the trucking industry has leveled out for the time being.
The Numbers
At first, the BLS said that April’s job numbers were 1,480,300. The BLS now says April’s count is 1,481,600, which looks better but makes the jump to May seem larger as well. For May 2021, the BLS pegs the number at 1,479,700. The difference in decrease between the two April numbers is thirteen hundred jobs. Assuming the first numbers for April, 600 is not much of a decrease.
Furthermore, March’s employment has solidified. At 1,481,000 jobs, it had a total decrease of 1,700 from the initial estimate.
Conclusion
With these numbers the trucking industry maintains the numbers it had three years ago, but still is approximately 50,000 employees short of the all-time high in July 2019. Only time will tell how long it takes until we see those numbers again.
