April 2021: Trucking Jobs Dip by About a Thousand
The preliminary numbers for April 2021 trucking jobs, as well as the solidified numbers for February 2021, have both come in. The numbers are very similar, in that both say the trucking industry saw a decrease in jobs, but not by much.
The Numbers As of April 2021
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) says that their initial estimate for all employees in the trucking industry is 1,480,300. This is a drop of 1,500 for their current estimates for March 2021, and 2,400 fewer employees than their first approximation for March 2021 (the BLS updates the numbers as time moves forward).
Furthermore, the BLS ended their research in February 2021 at 1,480,200 jobs in the trucking industry. This is 4,500 more than their initial results, a margin of error slightly above a third of a percent. Compared to January 2021, it is a drop of around 1,800.
Of course, an analysis of the count for April 2021 trucking jobs would not be complete without a comparison to its last year counterpart: the difference between the two is currently 51,900, but is set to change.
Conclusion
The trucking industry has had quite a ride from the coronavirus pandemic. Having 1,524,800 in February 2020, the last full month before the pandemic started, the trucking industry is still 44,600 jobs below what it was with an open economy, but counts are more comparable to what they were in 2018.
