March 2021: Trucking Jobs Have Upswing
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has updated the count of employees in the trucking industry, both preliminaries for March and official numbers for January. Considering the last few months of information have been regarding employment, the results are surprising.
Preliminary Employment Count March 2021
The BLS estimates March 2021 to have an average employment of 1,482,700 people. This is an increase of over 3,000 of what the BLS currently predicts February’s job numbers to be, which is an almost 4,000 job increase that the Bureau estimated it to be in March.
With the previous two months, they not only publish their first values for the most recent month, but also revise the month prior without making them official.
Official Employment Count
The BLS pegs January 2021 job numbers at 1,480,200. This is quite an increase from their initial calculations of 1,475,400.
Furthermore, it signifies that January 2021 had more people working in the industry than in December 2020, meaning that there was no actual pattern of a new presidential term affecting total job numbers and that the slow season was not as slow as initially thought.
The news is not all positive, however. The number of “production and nonsupervisory employees” dropped with the change of year, meaning that the increase in jobs is attributable to jobs in the industry not directly related to driving trucks, such as manufacturers, dealerships, mechanics, and accountants.
Conclusion
April 2020 had one of the steepest declines for employment in the industry, a nosedive of over 87,000 jobs. It will be interesting to compare and contrast the data with this years’, both when the data is first published and when additional research updates it.
