New York to Work on Bridge Repairs for the Next Year
Infrastructure work is a lot like going to the dentist or getting a truck brought into the shop for preventive maintenance. It is a lot of pain to go through, but it is only a fraction of the pain that comes from the alternative of not putting in the work. Such is the case with four bridges along I-87, upon which the New York State Thruway Authority is closing down the two pairs of bridges, two at a time, for a period lasting a little over a year.
Details
The four bridges in question travel across Kaaterskill Creek and Catskill Creek. Both the northbound and southbound bridges will undergo repair, starting with repairing the southbound bridges for the next six or seven months. In the interim, the corresponding northbound bridges will be split in half to accompany both ways of traffic, making it so that if a traveler forgets the news, it will still be possible to travel over the water. However, with the bridges servicing over 33,000 motorists daily and now having half the lanes to do so, it will become a traffic bottleneck.
The work involves repairing concrete on the bridge’s deck, while also repairing the railing on the sides to reduce the chances of a driver going overboard.
Conclusion
Bridge repair has become a lot more prominent in the news ever since stories of various elevated roads collapsing have hit the news, such as the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsing in Baltimore or an I-10 bridge collapsing in Los Angeles. While both of those instances were a result of unnatural phenomena (ship collision and fire, respectively), the four bridges in New York have been open since 1955, making this renovation a celebration of the bridges’ 70th anniversary should the construction be completed in the summer of 2025, as scheduled.
While infrastructure repair does not lead to breaking headlines compared to catastrophes (this story will likely not trend on X, as the Francis Scott Key Bridge story did), it costs a lot less in resources and potential lives lost than replacing bridges as the need arises.
