A Hat Trick of Monthly Truck Sales Growth Numbers
First February, then March, and now April. We reported last month (and the month before that) about how year-over-year truck sales increased by triple digit percentages. Would you believe that it has happened for the third time in a row? ACT Research and FTR have the numbers!
Details
ACT Research pins the number at a 201% increase from April 2025 (24,800 units). FTR pins it at a more conservative 199% (25,500 units). Units are down 30% month-over-month, but April is usually one of the slower months for truck sales, so year-over-year is a more apt comparison.
So what is the cause of all of this rampant purchasing, giving the trucking industry a jumpstart not seen since the coronavirus pandemic started letting up? Dan Moyer of FTR has an interesting hypothesis:
“The abrupt shift in demand in recent months has brought some risks as we have noted previously. One risk is that fleets will act out of ‘fear of missing out,’ or FOMO, to order earlier or in larger quantities than needed to avoid being shut out of 2026 production, thus raising cancellation risks. We still believe that risk is limited unless freight recovery stalls. Demand is very strong, but OEMs and suppliers must now ramp production from a low Q1 base without creating labor, supply chain, quality or inventory issues. Overall, April orders reinforce the main message: Class 8 demand remains strong, but the focus is shifting from demand recovery to backlog quality and production execution.”
Is it possible that the skyrocket-levels of increased purchasing are causing even more trucks to roll off of lots, creating a cycle as trucking companies scramble to get what they can? If so, how long will it last? We will have to wait and see if the theory from FTR holds true in the coming months.
Conclusion
In prior months we asked if the triple-digit growth will continue. Now, it seems as if a better question is how long the triple-digit year-over-year growth will last. With three months down, is it possible that we will see an entire year of triple-digit growth? Unlikely, but we can certainly hope!
