INFRA Program to Add 900 Truck Parking Spots in Florida
We love hearing a new story about more truck parking. With the dreaded statistics of approximately 10 trucks to every parking space and 40% of truckers spending an hour each day finding a place to park, we will take all the parking spots we can get. Rather than private funding provided on the behalf of Dolly Parton, however, the latest and greatest parking news comes from the Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight & Highway Projects (INFRA) program.
Details
The INFRA program is simple: states and similar entities apply for federal funding that is then used to bolster infrastructure. In this case, it is additional parking for trucks along the Interstate 4 freight corridor, to the tune of 900 parking spaces.
In a state as populous as Florida, this is a massive boon for safety and productivity. “Analysis found that during peak periods truck parking demand can exceed 150% in some areas of the state,” a 2024 Florida Department of Transportation Freight Mobility and Trade Plan noted.
The funding will provide five parking sites spread across four counties, and construction for all of them is currently set to finish by the end of 2027.
“Truck drivers shouldn’t have to choose between following the law and finding a safe place to park,” said Derek Barrs, administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration at the groundbreaking ceremony at the first site. “These new parking spaces will help drivers get the rest they need, reduce dangerous roadside parking and make one of Florida’s busiest freight corridors safer for everyone.”
Conclusion
Now for some math. The project is estimated to cost $180 million in federal taxpayer dollars. Creating 900 parking spots, assuming that they run at 100% capacity and save each trucker a full hour of driving to the cost of $30 an hour, it will take 182 years for the project to pay itself back in time savings. This may seem like a less-than-stellar investment, but it also adds a layer of safety to truck drivers who otherwise would need to park in risky locations such as ramp shoulders, and that is priceless.
