CVSA Schedules Brake Safety Week Starting August 23rd
Aside from the driver behind the wheel itself, perhaps the most important instrument a truck has for providing safety is the braking system. To that end, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has a Brake Safety Week each year to increase enforcement on this valuable piece of trucking equipment. For 2026 it spans from August 23rd to the 29th.

As with other events hosted by the CVSA, the CVSA will work with highway enforcement to inspect and examine trucks to make sure that their brakes are up to the high standards that hauling 80,000 pounds demands. Should a truck fail inspection, it will be given an out-of-service order until the issue is remedied.
Every year when it happens, the CVSA focuses on a different aspect of the system. This time it is focusing on the drum and rotor of the brake. Issues with drums and rotors make the braking system less efficient, which could be the difference between a safe stop and a collision.
The CSVA would rather everyone passes inspection, and has put out a guide to help people prepare for late August on their webpage flyer:
- Inspect visible portions of the drum or rotor as part of your pre- and post-trip inspections.
- Look for signs of cracked or broken pieces in the friction surface of the rotor.
- Look for cracks that run through to the outer portion of the drum or missing pieces, where visible.
- On disc brakes, pay attention to the condition of the rotor. Heavily rusted rotors across the entire friction surface indicate an inoperative brake.
- If the rotor is grooved, indicating metal-to-metal contact, that means the brake pads are worn and the shoe is making contact with the rotor.
- Ensure the rotor is not worn to the extent that the center vents are exposed.
- Make sure all repairs are consistent with the brake manufacturer’s requirements and guidelines.
- Note any issues in your driver vehicle inspection reports and report them to the motor carrier.
Conclusion
The average out-of-service rate for Brake Safety Week hovers at around 13.5%. We will have to see if it turns out lower than the previous record of 2023 with a rate of 12.6%. Fingers crossed that America beats the record!
