CVSA Brake Safety Week 2024
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) is having its annual increased rate of inspections and safety enforcement for 2024, this year, it is from August 25th to the 31st. Here are some things you may wish to know.
Details
The CVSA has a similar event, Brake Safety Day, on a surprise day each and every year to make sure fleets are operating safely when they suspect nobody is looking. Brake Safety Week is quite different from that: it usually happens in late August and fleets are given ample time to prepare.
The CVSA will be working with various forms of safety agencies such as highway patrols to get the inspections done. This year’s focus will be on the condition of brake linings and pads.
Brake Safety Week has shown that trucks’ brakes are being kept in better condition over time, and by extension are getting safer. In the 2021 Brake Safety Week, 15.4% of vehicles inspected received out-of-service violations, and that number decreased to 13.3% in 2022 and 12.6% in 2023. At the same time, however, brake violations were the most common violation for the 2023 International Roadcheck, another CVSA inspection event, at 25.2%. This suggests that truckers take advantage of the warning time and focus of Brake Safety Week to make sure everything is in order for the event.
Conclusion
If you or your fleet will be out on the road the week of August 25th (and face it, that likely is the case because a week is a lot of business), it is a good idea to invest now in getting the brakes inspected on your truck(s), especially the brake linings and pads. If everything goes well, hopefully America can score lower than a 12.6% out-of-service rate and continue the trend of safety improvement. We wrote in the data analysis for Brake Safety Week 2023 that we at TopMark Funding are hoping for a failure rate of 12.3% or lower: we will have to see if we reach a success rate of seven trucks for every eight inspected.
