WYDOT to Plan Superloads Slowing I-80 to a Crawl
How far is it from Laramie to Medicine Bow, both in Wyoming? About fifty-seven miles. Despite the relatively short distance, a plan from the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) to shift three transformers over the summer can cause miles of traffic if truckers traveling on one of the nation’s busiest roadways are not careful.
Details
The image for this article comes from WYDOT and a previous time they delivered a transformer, just to give an idea of how big of an undertaking delivery is.
“The transport dimensions are 17’3” tall, 26’ wide, 385’ long and weighs 1,484,000 lbs. Due to the size of the superload, both lanes of travel will be used. Not to cause damage to the interstate the transport will be traveling at 25-30 mph, dropping to 10 mph over bridges. Stoppages and travel delays should be expected,” WYDOT said in a statement.
Transformers are used to help facilitate the transportation of electricity, increasing or decreasing voltage as necessary. The first delivery is expected to happen on July 1st, with the other two happening later in the summer.
Conclusion
If you are traveling on the I-80 within 100 miles of Laramie or Medicine Bow at any point during this summer, it would be a foolish decision to not scope out news from WYDOT to make sure that the delivery of such a large and expensive piece of equipment does not put a dent into your travel plans. Though each transformer will be on the I-80 for only about two hours each, they are expected to cause significant traffic delays when they do happen.
The convoy will be traveling westward, first on I-80, then on Wyoming Highway 13, then US Route 287. Our advice for you should you be moving westward during these massive journeys to instead do the opposite: get onto the 287 at Laramie, cross over at 13, and get back onto the 80. The 287 is authorized for use by heavy-duty trucks, but not so much for cargo weighing over 1 million pounds, which is why the superload is planned to spend as much time on the I-80 as possible.
