Citizens Air Compliant Program in NYC Targets Idling Trucks
If you are traveling in New York City, it is imperative that you turn off your truck when dealing with deliveries in a safe and responsible manner, as the most populated city in the country has a special system that turns everyday pedestrians into enforcement officers.
Details
It is called the Citizen Air Compliant Program, and the rules are simple: if a citizen reports an idling truck and that report leads to a fine, the city will grant 25% of the fine to the reporter. With fines being up to $600, that means that a five minute phone call can net a passerby with $150.
One particular resident of the Big Apple has found it to be particularly lucrative. A bicycle rider who goes by the name of “Streeter” (presumably to prevent retaliation) reported to the news that he makes over $100,000 per year by hunting idling trucks and reporting them.
“Shortly after 6, I’m out on my bike, looking for idling trucks,” Streeter said. “I’m essentially biking 6, 7, 8, 9 hours a day.”
Lawmakers say that the compounding effects of having hundreds of trucks idling for every day is a public health issue that impacts the air quality for the millions of residents living in New York City, hence making the fines necessary to curtail emissions (while also generating additional revenue for the municipality–an estimated $70 million so far and growing).
Conclusion
Hopefully, this knowledge of the Citizens Air Compliant Program can help you and other drivers avoid collecting unnecessary fines. If you are in one of the boroughs of New York City, make sure to turn off the engine when you are not moving to avoid racking up hefty fines.
The other alternative is to not deliver to New York City, and frankly, we would not blame you. Between the fees for moving within the city and fines for staying put, combined with these costs being passed on to the customer, stretching to the breaking point in a time where costs are spiraling upward, it might just not be worth the headache to make the journey unless a delivery contract is particularly lucrative.
