Freight Bridge Between USA and Mexico to Be Built
Despite recent tensions between the United States and Mexico regarding various things such as tariffs, money transfer fees, and deportations, Mexico and the USA still remain strong business partners with one another. Millions of dollars worth of goods still travel between the border every day. To that end, the United States has given the green light to a project called Green Corridors, which would be a freight-only bridge connecting Mexico and Texas to cut down commute time for commercial vehicles to virtually zero.
Details
The project is to be funded by private capital and will incur a toll both to recoup construction costs and to turn a profit, but likely will be a worthwhile investment to commercial drivers who might otherwise need to wait multiple hours rather than not having to cross the border internationally at all.
“Green Corridors’ intelligent freight transportation system offers a solution at Port Laredo that will benefit future generations to come by reducing congestion, bypassing gridlocked areas and increasing border security,” the investment group wrote. “We’re pioneering the future of freight with low-emission autonomous shuttles navigating congested corridors on dedicated elevated guideways. This groundbreaking approach bypasses congestion and integrates seamlessly with existing infrastructure, redefining efficiency in freight transportation.”
The plan, as detailed by the investment company, is to have cargo unloaded into their own shuttles that would then cross the border and be picked up by a different driver on the other end. While this would require more manpower, it creates a “bucket brigade” for companies working between the two countries: rather than having a fleet constantly moving between the two nations, the fleet would constantly load and unload and continue moving.
Conclusion
Current details regarding how long it would take for operation Green Corridors and its cost are relatively sparse, but if it ultimately works out as well as promised, it will be a win-win for everyone involved: the investment firm will make a killing offering the reduced travel time, and trucking companies would save a lot of money that would otherwise be lost to idle time. We hope everything goes well.
