Unique Electric Trucking Solution
When it comes to electric vehicles, let alone Class 8 trucks, perhaps the biggest obstacle from them becoming mainstream is charging times.
Using a standard plug on a standard electric vehicle charges a car at approximately 4 miles per hour, which is great if you do it while you are sleeping, but in other scenarios, such as commercial drivers moving 80,000 pounds at a time, it leaves a lot to be desired.
A company headquartered in China has a solution that has the potential to change the charging game as we know it.
Details
The company in question is called Windrose, and they are partnering with a US company that specializes in electric charging for commercial vehicles.
The solution the two companies have concocted together is surprisingly simple: charging from two stations at the same time.
By having two charging ports on the truck, Windrose and the American company Terawatt have been able to provide 650 kilowatts through two 350 kilowatt chargers, an increase of about 86%.
Using this dual-charging method, they were able to charge a truck to travel 240 miles in 40 minutes, or a rate of about 363 miles per hour.
Not bad, considering the weight of the average heavy-duty truck and how much energy it takes to make it move.
Conclusion
This change makes electric vehicle trucking significantly more viable: if a driver travels 240 miles in approximately 4 hours, he or she can stop for lunch and receive a charge, then do the same four hours later for an early dinner, followed by driving again and recharging when it is time to hit the hay.
Though this unique approach to electric charging helps make the waiting game less painful, it is still a far cry from diesel trucking: if it takes ten minutes to fill 100 gallons and the truck gets 7.5 miles per gallon of diesel fuel, a comparable diesel charges at a rate of 4,500 miles per hour, 12 times faster than electricity’s best.
More work will have to be done in order to make electric trucking a reality in the coming decades.
