Trump Rolls Back Obama-Era Emissions Waiver
One June 12th, 2025, 47th President of the United States Donald Trump signed an order that rules back a regulation from the Obama-era that gave states such as California more leeway in determining its own emission standards for vehicles, ranging from standard 4-wheel passenger vehicles used to commute to work to commercial vehicles that are work.
Details
You have likely heard it all regarding California by now: banning of diesel sales by 2036, phasing diesel out completely by 2042. That plan by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has suffered another blow as Donald Trump has stepped in and said the state must bow to federal authority.
“They’re making you buy stuff that doesn’t work. It’s no good — doesn’t work. And I’m all for electric. If you want to buy electric, you can buy electric cars [that are] great. If you buy the right ones,” Trump said in signing the new order. “Cars are great. And you should be given the option. Buy the electric car. Buy a gasoline-powered car. Buy a hybrid.”
The move was met by praise from trucking industry stakeholders, including ATA President and CEO Chris Spear.
“Today, common sense prevailed. We thank President Trump, EPA Administrator Zeldin and congressional leadership for taking decisive action to end crippling, detached-from-reality rulemakings that would have imposed devastating economic consequences on American businesses and families,” Spear said. “This is not the United States of California. With the stroke of his pen, President Trump is restoring the certainty that the trucking industry needs to deliver for our nation as we continue to reduce our environmental impact.”
Conclusion
To make things abundantly clear, electric vehicles are far from done in terms of revolutionizing the trucking industry, just that it will have less backing from regulators trying to kick the industry into a new fuel source begrudgingly. Overall, details have shown that as long as the technology of electric vehicles continues to improve and its major hurdles such as charging times and lack of infrastructure are resolved, the trucking industry will eventually transition to an electrical future given lower operating costs. The main difference now is that market forces will take the lead rather than bureaucrats. It could still very well happen by 2042 that diesel trucks go the way of the dodo bird, but the impending weight behind that year has now been relaxed.
