US and China to Meet in London Over Trade
We get cheap imports from China; that is a fact. The 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump, sees that with a negative connotation in cheap.
No longer, he believes, is it a good value, but rather that components and materials used in trucks, such as steel, are frail and of lower quality. To that end, the tariff war began.
Now, United States and China negotiators are set to negotiate in London on June 9th (by the time you read this) to discuss what can be done to settle recent tensions.
Details
News comes from the president posting the announcement on his Truth Social account.
“I am pleased to announce that Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and United States Trade Representative, Ambassador Jamieson Greer, will be meeting in London on Monday, June 9, 2025, with Representatives of China, with reference to the Trade Deal,” Trump said in a post to his Truth Social network on June 6. “The meeting should go very well.”
The news comes hot off the heels of a June 5th call between Trump and Chinese Leader Xi Jinping where the two of them agreed to start taking steps to reduce animosity. The two have often butted heads against one another to try and get the best results for their constituencies.
Conclusion
China is the United States’ biggest trade partner outside of the North American continent, most notably with imports compared to exports; in 2022 the trade deficit was about a third of a trillion dollars.
The two most common types of imports the USA receives from China are electronic equipment and machinery, both of which go into commercial vehicles.
Trump feels that having such a strong dependency on China to keep the United States economy going may put U.S. into a tight spot later down the road should the Asian country leverage its position to strongarm the United States into something later, and hopes to prevent that from happening while also making sure that the relationship between the two countries does not reach a boiling point. International politics is all about the balance of power: respect, not fear.
