California Doubles Down on Clean Vehicles
“Out of the frying pan and into the fire” is a common phrase, but it is an accurate telling of the battle for low-emission vehicles in California. When one battle ends, another begins.
Details
Hot on the heels of President Donald Trump signing resolutions to end the electric vehicle mandates, California Governor Gavin Newsom struck back.
In this new order, Newsom directed the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to “develop and propose an Advanced Clean Cars III regulation consistent with State and federal law, that reduces greenhouse gas, criteria air pollutant, and toxic emissions from passenger cars and light-duty trucks, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, to advance progress towards the deployment of clean air vehicles and technologies in the State, as an additional measure to build on existing regulations or as an alternative measure for deployment if the federal disapprovals of the Advanced Clean Cars II, Advanced Clean Trucks, and Heavy-Duty Omnibus regulations are not invalidated in court.”
In short, while California does not have plans to stop diesel combustion dead in its tracks by 2042 (unless lawsuits currently going through the system rule in the state’s favor), that is not going to stop the Golden State from trying to give electric, hydrogen, and other forms of fuel a bit of an additional edge.
“Any truck manufacturers who thought California was off the board were just proven wrong,” said Craig Segall, deputy executive officer at CARB. “It’s time for them to finally behave accordingly and bring cheap powerful EV trucks to market at scale.”
Conclusion
All of this is to say that the battle between federal and state governments has instead reached a different flashpoint: rather than harming diesel trucks and gasoline cars through burdensome regulation, California will be taking steps to promote alternative fuels to make the switch easier. With a dearth of electric charging stations and each one of them taking a significantly longer time to charge than comparable diesel, California certainly has an uphill battle if it wants to convince truckers to go electric. We will have to wait and see what happens.
