Trailer Sales Slide Slightly for July 2021
Last month was a somber one for trailer sales, as the numbers were lower than they were the same month in 2020. This month is a little more disheartening than that, as not only was July 2021 lower than July 2020, but June 2021 as well.
July 2021 Details
Freight Transportation Research (FTR) estimates the sales numbers to be 8,200 units. This is 68% of last month and 42% of the same month last year. The rolling total for trailers sold in the last 12 months is now 354,000.
While Don Ake’s predictions for Class 8 truck sales have not manifested yet, they have started to come true for trailers. “The orders are in for 2021, but the challenge remains to build the trailers,” Don Ake, FTR VP of commercial vehicles, commented. “OEMs continue to struggle hiring factory workers. Suppliers are struggling to keep pace due to a shortage of manpower and imported parts and components. The supply chain is still experiencing disruptions and bottlenecks. Some improvement in production is expected this year, but there are indications some supplies will be restricted into next year.”
Conclusion
We do not like being negative, but considering just how well trailer orders went in August 2020, we are going to predict that sales for this year will be lighter than the last.
At the very least, the problem seems to be a lack of supply rather than demand, meaning that it will be a long time before we see a repeat of April 2020 again.
