Tesla Semi Delayed Yet Again
About six months ago, we predicted that the Tesla Semi would not hit the market in 2021. Then, they had a battery cell shortage. It looks like our prediction has finally been vindicated, as Tesla Motors announced that the launch date for the Tesla Semi has officially been pushed back to 2022.
The Details
The news comes from Tesla’s investor call on Monday, July 26th. Tesla says that the decision to delay comes not only from the battery cell shortage from earlier, but also from other components. In particular, Elon Musk said, “In order for Cybertruck and Semi to scale to volume that’s meaningful for customer deliveries, we’ve got to solve the chip shortage working with our suppliers.”
The news marks the third time the Tesla Semi has been delayed. Unveiled in 2017 and originally slated for a 2019 release, event after event has caused the project to stall and to suffer delay after delay. As indicated by Musk, the Cybertruck, notorious on the internet for its sharp ridges, is also being delayed into the future.
Conclusion
The news is disappointing for those who have reserved a Tesla Semi when they eventually release. Notable companies that have reserved one or more Semis include delivery companies UPS, FedEx, and J.B. Hunt; but also private property companies delivering their own goods for other business operations such as PepsiCo and Walmart.
With the launch now slated for 2022, the horizon is set to six-to-eighteen months. This is, of course, provided that the Semi is not delayed a fourth time.
