Southwestern States Suffer Diesel Shortage
Drivers headed towards the western coast may want to stock up on fuel ahead of time, as various fueling stations in the southwest are starting to feel a strain from a lack of fuel.
Details
With everything being in short supply nowadays, from computer chips to rubber to human resources, it is hardly a surprise that diesel fuel would eventually start being rationed.
The following sixteen truck stops have been reported as either being out of fuel, or enforcing fuel limits of up to 60 gallons.
- Petro Eloy, AZ
- Petro Kingman, AZ
- TA Tonopah, AZ
- TA Willcox, AZ
- TA Holbrook, AZ
- TA Eloy, AZ
- TA Kingman, AZ
- TA Gallup, NM
- TA Santa Rosa, NM
- TA Moriarty, NM
- TA Las Vegas, NV
- Petro North Las Vegas, NV
- FJP Circleville, OH
- FJP Chillicothe, OH
- FJP Columbus, OH
- FJP London, OH
A truck getting 6.5 miles to the gallon may have to stop once or twice along the route to fuel up again when receiving only a 60 gallon refuel each time, but the lower tank utilization does lower the gross vehicle weight, leading to a more fuel-efficient ride.
Perhaps most puzzling of all is why it is affecting this particular area of the United States and not places like Florida or Tennessee. Did a pipeline in the southwest become hacked? Nobody seems to know the answer, but the most likely culprit is that which is causing all of the other shortages nationwide: the economy was grinded to a halt to combat the spread of COVID-19, and this is part of the resulting economic fallout.
Assuming the first law of economics falls into place (supply, demand, price), expect the prices in these four states to rise in the foreseeable future.
Conclusion
Any trucker heading to the above-mentioned states will want to prepare ahead of time. Take steps to increase fuel efficiency, such as driving 55 miles per hour, and have an emergency reserve of diesel in the cab. These precautions could stop you from having to stop for a partial refuel, or worse, being stuck in the desert.
