Professional Driver Agency Releases Top Ten Driver Issues
The Professional Driver Agency is a company that works on fleets’ behalf to help retain truckers by keeping the company’s workforce happy. They also conduct research on the side. Through thousands of phone calls in 2021, they have compiled a list of the ten most common complaints. You may think the number one issue has to do with pay, but the list is more complicated than that.
The List
The fine folks over at Commercial Carrier’s Journal have the list covered in full, which you can view at the video below. For our purposes, however, we want to highlight those we deem the most crucial.
Numbers 1, 3, 6, and 10 all have one thing in common: equipment. Whether it be the truck breaking down and needing emergency repairs or being given a worn-down truck as a starter, truckers have an eye for quality and will judge the value of the employment relationship based on that which they drive. After all, they spend a majority of a given day inside the cab!
What Can Be Done
As we have covered extensively, the coronavirus pandemic has led to supply shortages for components to the point where even the used truck market is feeling the strain. In today’s market, it is borderline impossible to get a new truck for your newest hires.
What can be done to help a driver feel more appreciated is to spruce up the truck given to them. Apply a paint job on the tractor, install a minifridge, upgrade the mattress in the sleeper section of the cabin. These small actions can add up to a trucker taking more pride in his or her work.
Conclusion
While components for trucks are undergoing global supply chain shortages that will make even the strongest of fleets’ heads spin, that does not mean that your newest hire has to be given a clunker of a truck. 70% of those surveyed by the Professional Driver Agency said that the state of the truck gives a strong impression on how much the company values them, so it pays dividends to spruce up older trucks to make them more comfortable rides. Whether it is replacing the seats or upgrading the radio, every advantage can help retain employees in this time that is being called the Great Resignation.
