Freedom Convoy Turns Into Border Blockade
We last wrote about the Canada vaccinations with news of the Freedom Convoy, but it appears that that is now over. The protestors have taken a different direction with their protesting now that they have finished traveling from Vancouver to Ottawa, and are protesting in the Canadian way: through passive resistance.
Details
You might remember that in our last article we wrote how the convoy would not accomplish anything because it does not hit politicians and constituents where it hurts. While we inherently disagree with the idea of stopping others from crossing the border to help with the global supply chain issues, it is hard to deny that blocking a border crossing with one of the United States’ greatest trade partners will not get a point across better than driving over 2,700 miles.
Truckers in Ottawa are honking at the blockade, keeping Ottawa residents awake throughout the night. “We understand your frustration … but the responsibility for your inconvenience lies squarely on the shoulders of politicians,” protest leader Chris Barber said in a statement to Ottawa residents.
Justin Trudeau continues to say that he will not be intimidated by the “fringe minority”.
Conclusion
While the blockade is likely to be effective, it also will make the truckers look bad. Rather than scheduling a convoy and turning it into a blockade, the money should have been used to pay independent, unvaccinated Canadian truck drivers to stay at home during a historical supply chain shortage. Even 10% fewer truckers on the road would have devastating effects on Canada’s economy and would send the message succinctly, but that is just our thoughts. We would love to hear yours.
