Canadian Truckers Rally “Freedom Convoy” Against Mandated Vaccinations
Starting on Sunday the 23rd and will probably be over by the time you read this, truck drivers in Canada protested vaccine mandates (including one involving crossing the United States border) by having a convoy travel from Vancouver to Ottawa, the capitol. It is over 40 miles long.
Details
We have talked about our northern neighbors, their vaccine mandates, and their effects on the supply chain before. With an estimated 15% of Canadian truck drivers unvaccinated, the Canadian Trucking Alliance estimates vaccine mandates will impact 16,000 truckers trying to cross the border, and that is for one mandate alone!
Canadian truckers differ from American drivers: while American drivers are vaccinated at a rate lower than the general population, truckers are slightly higher, with 82.5% of all eligible citizens fully vaccinated.
Naturally, with the Canadian government being more liberal than the United States, the convoy has been met with disdain from politicians. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said participants of the protest are a “small fringe minority who are on the way to Ottawa who are holding unacceptable views.” With estimates of the number of trucks exceeding 50,000, it does not take an expert to know that not all protestors are unvaccinated and trying to cross internationally. If we assume all of the truckers are Canadian, then almost 1/6th of the drivers in Canada are in protest of the mandates.
At 70 kilometers, the convoy is more than nine times longer and has more than ten times more trucks than the largest completed convoy in history, done in Egypt in November 2020. Canada has a world record on its hands.
Conclusion
Like the vaccinated truckers participating in the convoy, we are both in support of COVID-19 vaccines and against mandating them. We stand with the Freedom Convoy.
Unfortunately, the protest is likely to fall on deaf ears if Trudeau’s words hint at anything, making this a waste of time and diesel fuel. If Canadian truckers want to make a point about vaccine mandates, they will have to protest in a way that makes their government really feel it.
