Canada to Reject Unvaccinated Truckers
The United States Supreme Court may have recently declared the vaccine mandate to be an overstep by OSHA, but when it comes to international affairs, things get a little bit more complicated and the battle over vaccine mandates continues. Truckers traveling to the Great White North will need to provide proof of vaccination in order to cross the border.
Details
Starting January 15th, which will have happened by the time you read this, truckers traveling to Canada will have to show proof of full vaccination. In this case, either two Pfrizers, two Modernas, or one J&J; boosters are not a part of the equation just yet but might be in the future.
Simply having a vaccine card is not enough: the Canadian government requires all foreigners to use the ArriveCan mobile app to upload proof. ArriveCan also allows users to provide proof of exemption from the vaccine. Travelers without a smartphone can also access the app via a computer with Internet access.
Trucking companies that have more than a handful of employees will find reordering their fleet and its deliveries to have vaccinated truckers go across the border instead to be complicated but worth it; owner-operators who want to avoid the jab are being shut out of the Canadian market altogether.
The news of requiring vaccination to visit the Maple Nation has been met with disdain from the trucking industry, but more likely than not will stay in effect for the length of the pandemic and beyond. Canada is generally much more liberal than the United States, and even here it was only beaten 6-3 in the Supreme Court. Truckers from the United States will have a much harder time carving an exemption for themselves.
This could have major effects on the supply chain strain the world is already facing: Canada exports significantly more than just maple syrup. Its largest exports include oil, aluminum, and steel, all of which are used in the production of big rigs. There is potential for a logistical nightmare in the trucking industry as a direct result, but we will have to wait and see to be sure of just how large of an effect this will have on the global supply chain.
