Prebuying to Avoid Regulations
The government is like a massive ship. It has a lot of inertia, and it is a lot harder to turn it, let alone 180 degrees when it is in motion.
Despite there being an inevitable transfer of power once Trump takes the Oval Office, he might find it difficult to stop previously established EPA standards for the 2027 model year.

We wrote about this earlier, in what is being referred to now in the trucking industry as the “2027 Prebuy”. Though the Trump Administration may change course in the 18 or so months between the start of his second term and the 2027 model year hitting dealerships, engine manufacturers have already been working hard on making engines compliant with the established EPA regulations for years.
The most notable of these is the NOx standards within the EPA GHG Phase 3 regulations, requiring a hard limit of 0.035 grams of NOx per horsepower hour. As with most regulations regarding technological standards, older machines are grandfathered in with the expectation that they will eventually break beyond repair and become replaced with the newer machines.
Higher standards require better processes and materials, with the costs associated with often being passed on to the consumers, or at least as much as the market of supply and demand is able to withstand!
Conclusion
All of this is to say that if you are planning on upgrading some of your fleet, this period before the 2027 model year becomes the norm is a great time to do so.
Were you to purchase a 2026 model, it could very well last until 2040, at which point the costs associated with maintaining the 2027 NOx standards will likely be much cheaper due to more sophisticated technology.
