FMCSA Revokes Three ELD Registrations
When it comes to ELD regulations, we have aired our grievances before. It seems someone at the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is a huge fan of our writing, as they are taking steps to inform truckers of Electronic Logging Devices being removed from their registry. Either that, or it is a happy coincidence.
Details
The FMCSA announced in mid-November that three ELDs were no longer eligible units because the companies behind them did meet minimum requirements, these ELDs and their identifiers are:
- Keep Tracking (KTE001).
- Rollingtrans ELD – Accurate One (RTOA47).
- RT ELD Plus – Accurate Plus (RTPS47).
The changes in the list of approved ELDs means two things for truckers with these devices. First, it means those with it must immediately switch to paper logs or logging software to enter hours-of-service manually.
Next, it means that truckers must obtain new, approved ELDs before January 17th, 2025.
The FMCSA has asked law enforcement of all types to not cite drivers for using these ELDs until January 17th, instead asking them to request manual logs, paper or digital, instead.
After that date, penalties will continue as they typically do for failing to use a registered ELD.
Conclusion
While the FMCSA has taken steps to notify drivers and fleets about these changes, it still has quite a ways to go in taking a proactive approach.
Their list of registered ELDs still states all of them are self-certified and that the FMCSA does not endorse any themselves.
While this prevents the impression of a conflict of interest, it still leaves fleets in a bit of uncertainty as to if their purchased ELDs will be usable for many years ahead, or they will become insufficient in the same way as the KTE001. As we said over four years ago:
“The way things are now, the system puts an undue burden on truckers and carriers alike, who just want to haul freight. If the FMCSA wants to improve safety regulation, one of the best ways to do so is to make it as painless for those trying to follow it as reasonably possible.”
