Regulatory Changes Under President Trump
Regulations are much harder to get off the books than they are to prevent from getting onto them in the first place. With Donald Trump a few months out from his second presidential term, here are some potential changes to upcoming regulations plaguing the trucking industry.
EPA Phase 3
The Greenhouse Gas Emissions Standards for Heavy-Duty Vehicles-Phase 3 by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that a specific number of new trucks sold in 2032 must be electric.
There have been many lawsuits fighting tooth and nail to prevent it from becoming reality, stating it places an undue burden on truckers working in commerce.
It is likely that Donald Trump under his “Drill, Baby, Drill” policy will reverse course on this. At the same time, it is highly unlikely that the Trump Administration would force a stop on California’s own emission regulations that make it illegal to operate a diesel truck within the state’s borders in 2042.
This is because Donald Trump is a staunch supporter of states rights, protected under the Ninth Amendment of the Constitution.
Speed Limiters
Every four months or so, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration brings up the idea of speed limiters again, to the detraction of drivers within the trucking industry.
With it being such an unpopular concept within the trucking industry, our chips are on the proposal being kicked down the road for at least another four years.
Foreign Component Ban
In a regulation that a Trump Administration will likely not change, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security is floating the idea of a foreign component ban when it comes to high-tech features in trucks, such as sophisticated GPS and Automated Driving Systems, when they come from Russia or China.
As it stands now, the ban is set to start taking place in 2027, ramping up until 2030. More likely than not, Trump is going to let it happen as he promotes his “America First” agenda.
Conclusion
Nothing is set in stone, however, as we do not have a direct line to the billionaire. We are simply inferring from how Trump behaved during his first term to determine some of the regulations Trump will terminate, some that he will not entertain, and some that he will allow to continue.
One thing is for sure: the next four years are going to be very interesting for the trucking industry!
