Lee Zeldin to Lead EPA
With Trump slated to return to the Oval Office in 2025, he is picking out people to lead in the executive branch of the United States federal government.
You may have heard of a few of them by now, but one that will have a profound impact on the trucking industry is whoever leads the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Now we know that the person Trump has picked for this role is Lee Zeldin, a former representative from New York.
The Legend of Zeldin
Lee Zeldin has worn many hats throughout his career, spanning the army in 2003 to an attorney in 2007. He served in the New York State Senate from 2011 to 2014, and in the federal House of Representatives from 2015 to 2023.
Perhaps his most recent news story was his 2022 gubernatorial campaign, where he lost to incumbent Kathy Hocul in a 53-47 spread, the closest election for the position since 2002.
Implications for the Trucking Industry
“He will ensure fair and swift deregulatory decisions that will be enacted in a way to unleash the power of American businesses, while at the same time maintaining the highest environmental standards, including the cleanest air and water on the planet,” Trump said in a statement.
The most immediate effect that this will have is a rewrite of the EPA tailpipe solutions set under the Biden Administration. Likely, you are familiar with it: automakers and dealers having required percentages of zero-emission vehicles. This means that the perverse incentive of trucking fleets rushing to buy as many diesel-powered trucks before 2027 may not come to fruition after all.
Conclusion
While Lee Zeldin does not have any direct experience in regards to leading the EPA, he is a man of many hats, including representing the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in that attorney position we mentioned earlier, an entity that interacts with trucks daily as imports are brought into the country.
Overall there is likely to be a learning curve for Zeldin, but his appointment, should it pass the Senate, will be a boon for the trucking industry.
