Biden Administration Races Against the Clock for Infrastructure Spending
As with Biden replacing Trump’s policies before him, Trump will be doing the same in kind to President Biden once his term ends, reverting as much as he can before implementing his own changes to how the country is run. Because it is much harder to stop a moving train when it starts, the Biden Administration is working around the clock to get as much infrastructure and climate spending done in its stated projects before the 47th president can stop them.
Details
“There’s only one administration at a time,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg told reporters at a news conference Nov. 14. “That’s true now, and it will also be true after January 20th. Our responsibility is to make good use of the funds that Congress has authorized for us and that we’re responsible for assigning and disbursing throughout the last three years.”
Those funds come from two laws passed through Congress, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021, and the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. Between the two of them, there is approximately $1.5 trillion to be spent regarding the transportation industry. While a good amount of it has already been planned for numerous things such as truck parking spaces, the expectation is that Donald Trump will stop applying the money once he sits in the Oval Office.
One such example is the Department of Energy recently announcing a loan to the tune of $544 million to a silicon carbide wafer manufacturing company in Michigan, of which will be used in electric vehicles such as cars and trucks.
And Many More
A similar issue that indirectly impacts the transportation industry is the appointment of judges: the Biden Administration is similarly working hard to approve as many judges through the Senate as possible before January 20th, which can have numerous implications on rulings affecting trucking. One such example is the Ninth Circuit Court’s decision on the California AB-5 law and how it still applies to truck drivers.
All of this is to say that the Biden Administration is fighting tooth-and-nail to leave a lasting impact on the nation’s history. In the political realm turnabout is fair play, and likely in 2028 we will see a similar pattern with Donald Trump trying to rush things before his successor takes his seat.
