Iowa and Wyoming Receive Parking Funding
We at TopMark Funding love to hear about more parking spots, so we are excited to report that the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) is earmarking money to give to the Iowa Department of Transportation and Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) in the pursuit of more public parking spaces for commercial trucks.
Details
The funding comes from the federal government through the most recent source that most truck parking funding comes from, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Through the Act, WYDOT is receiving $26.64 million for 368 parking spots along I-80, and $57.3 million to the Iowa Department of Transportation for numerous renovations along the I-380, which includes but is certainly not limited to 14 more public parking spots for commercial vehicles.
Stakeholders were happy to hear about the implementation of new parking spots and additional facilities to make the jobs of truckers easier, especially during tumultuous weather.
“Truck parking continues to be one of the highest priorities for both truck drivers and motor carriers,” said the president and CEO of the Wyoming Trucking Association, Sheila Foertsch. “Safe, well-lit, accessible parking makes the nation’s highway system safer.”
President and CEO of the American Trucking Association, which represents trucking associations from all fifty states, Chris Spear, shared similar sentiments to Foertsch. “These projects in Wyoming and Iowa continue the momentum to alleviate the severe, nationwide shortage of truck parking, which consistently ranks as one of drivers’ top concerns. More states should step up and follow their example to improve the efficient movement of freight and enhance roadway safety for all motorists.”
Conclusion
With these parking spaces being placed in high-traffic areas, it is likely that they will be utilized a minimum of 23 hours a day. The battle against the truck parking shortage will continue to rage as the ratio of trucks to parking spots slowly decreases, but still has a long way to go as the number is still above ten-to-one. Still, as with most things in trucking, the industry will reach its destination as long as it keeps at it. A ratio of 2.5:1 is a good target for truckers no longer needing to park illegally or spending an hour or more looking for a reasonable spot.
