Mexico Pleads with Texas to Stop Inspections
Nothing like a little bit of international drama.
The country of Mexico is flabbergasted at the actions of the state of Texas, which recently announced increased scrutiny regarding inspections of trucks entering the state from Mexico. This is not the first time that this has happened, with it happening in April 2022 and ending with an agreement. Instead of coming to a mutually beneficial agreement this time, Mexico is planning to make Texas cooperate by force.
Details
As of the time of publishing, wait times for an inspection when entering Texas from Mexico can range from 8 hours to as much as 27 hours. This creates a lot of lost productivity, and in the case of perishables such as avocado imports, creates the potential for spoilage.
Mexico does not want to play ball with the state government this time, and is instead telling on them by going to the trade facilitation committee under the United States-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) free trade agreement, which is an agreement between the three North American countries and, dealing with the federal level of United States government, is likely to supersede what Texas is doing.
The current path of action is unclear, with Texas showing no signs of backing down, it appears that a dispute with the trade facilitation committee is imminent.
Conclusion
Diplomatic relations are almost as fun to read about as waiting in line for 27 hours for an inspection in entering Texas. If you are part of a fleet that imports goods from Mexico, our advice to you is to determine ahead of time where the inspection times are only 8 hours, and take the time to do the detour over there.
Currently, the largest wait time is at the Brownsville-Matamoros International Bridge. We advise you to avoid it as much as possible, but if crossing that bridge is inevitable for the journey back into the United States, we highly suggest having some form of entertainment and plenty of snacks on standby so you can be prepared for the wait that will last longer than a full day.
The previous backlog of April 2022 cost about $333 million per day in lost economic activity, but it is currently unknown how much this dispute will cost.
