Indiana to Close Two Rest Areas; Truckers Benefit
In the war of truck parking, drastic measures have to be taken to win every additional spot. This article may seem similar to one we wrote in March regarding the state of Missouri remodeling rest stops to have more truck parking spaces, but now Indiana is joining the cause.
Details
Starting June 1st, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will close off Clear Creek Welcome Center on I-70 and both northbound and southbound Lebanon Rest Areas on I-65. The construction is estimated to take two years, so INDOT plans to reopen them on June 1st, 2025.
When that happens, there will be 225 new parking spaces spread across the rest areas.
The projects are part of a larger scope of reworking 21 rest areas or welcome centers by 2030, an endeavor that will cost $600 million and add 1,100 total truck parking spaces across the state.
Beyond parking spaces, INDOT is adding additional amenities to the two rest stops, which include but are not limited to:
- Dog park.
- Improved restrooms.
- Improved vending options.
- Historical exhibits for drivers wanting to take a break from the road to learn about the area’s history.
- Walking paths.
The other 19 reworked locations are also expected to have more changes than just additional parking spaces, just like the two above.
Conclusion
In order to solve the truck parking crisis that is plaguing the nation, it is going to take effort from all sides, including private businesses, federal legislation, and work from each individual state as with Indiana and Missouri. This plan to add over one thousand parking spaces to Indiana is a good start, but considering that industry experts estimate that there is one designated truck parking spot for every eight Class 8 trucks on the road, the trucking industry is finding itself in the middle of a steep uphill battle.
There is a slight problem though: this can be considered an investment in truck parking spaces, as while the rest areas are closed for expansion, what truck parking spaces are currently there are off limits, meaning truckers in Indiana will be slightly more cramped for the next two years. In the end, we believe the added spots will be worth the trouble.
