Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act Reaches House
In December, we wrote about how the Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act was gaining momentum within the United States Senate, but also mentioned that it was only the first step to actually getting any legislation done, as it would need to go through the House of Representatives as well. That is happening now.
Details
The Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act is being introduced through the House of Representatives on behalf of Representatives Mike Bost (R. Illinois) and Angie Craig (D. Minnesota). Should it become law, it would authorize $755 million in grants for various organizations hoping to expand the truck parking that they have on their lots.
The Bill has also seen support in the Senate, being spearheaded by Senators Cynthia Lummins (R. Wyoming) and Mark Kelly (D. Arizona).
“The shortage of available and reliable parking for truck drivers puts a strain on truckers, Arizona businesses and our nation’s supply chain. Our bipartisan legislation will ensure that truck drivers can safely and efficiently move the goods that support our economy,” Kelly said in a statement regarding the Act.
Congress is not the only federal body that is keeping a close eye on truck parking; the Department of Transportation has also expressed interest in expanding it.
“When you talk with truck drivers it’s one of the first things that they’ll raise. And it’s not just a matter of convenience. It’s really a matter of safety,” DOT Secretary Pete Buttgieg said during a Senate budget hearing.
Conclusion
Now that the same Bill has been introduced into both parts of Congress, both wings need to reach a simple majority before it would go across Joe Biden’s desk for a signature. If he vetoes instead, which would be unlikely but not impossible, it would need a two-thirds majority in both wings.
Should the Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act become law, it would be one step closer to solving the truck parking problem that has been plaguing the industry for numerous years. Many private organizations are trying to resolve it themselves, but none of them have the sheer weight behind them that the United States government does.
