Joe Biden Visits Cummins Plant

Joe Biden visited the Cummins plant in Fridley, Minnesota on April 3rd for two reasons: one was political, with Biden traveling on his Investing in America tour to show citizens that he supports goods that are made in America, and the other is celebration, as Cummins has pledged to invest $1 billion across its numerous plants in its United States manufacturing network.

The star of the show for Biden was the electrolyzer, a component that is integral to the hydrogen energy extraction process.

“When Cummins first manufactured hydrogen electrolyzers, they had to make them overseas,” Biden said in his speech. “These are the machines that make clean hydrogen a renewable energy used to power our economy—from clean cars to trucks to steel to cement manufacturing. Now, thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act and the tax credits for renewable energy, Cummins is going to manufacture these electrolyzers here in American for the first time.”

Biden says that having it built in the United States is not only important for reinvesting in the economy, but also for allowing American consumers to get their goods hassle-free.

“Before the pandemic, the supply chain wasn’t something that most Americans ended up thinking about. But today, after delays for parts and products, everyone knows why supply chains are so important. Instead of relying on equipment made overseas in places like China, the supply chains will again begin in America. Cummins will build the technology that produces clean hydrogen. Companies and utilities across the country will use those products to make clean hydrogen.”

Conclusion

The expansion of the various plants Cummins has is expected to take numerous years before it is fully completed, but the production of the electrolyzer stateside is expected to begin in a matter of weeks. Once it happens and hydrogen-powered big rigs are easier to produce, diesel and electricity are likely to see a powerful competitor that combines the best of both worlds: refueling with the speed of diesel while have significantly fewer emissions than the fossil fuel.
