California to Impose Electric Truck Mandate
California, for better or worse, is always on the cutting edge of green technology in the trucking industry, but is it possible that it has gone too far this time with a new mandate that will require at least half of all new trucks sold in the state by 2035 to be fully electric?
Details
The Biden Administration’s EPA has said that California and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) are fully allowed to enact regulations that are stricter than national standards, including this mandate.
“Last year, California became one of the first jurisdictions in the world with a real plan to end tailpipe emissions for cars. Now, thanks to the Biden administration, we’re getting more zero-emission heavy duty trucks on the roads, expanding our world-leading efforts to cut air pollution and protect public health,” said California Governor Gavin Newsom. “We’re leading the charge to get dirty trucks and buses – the most polluting vehicles – off our streets, and other states and countries are lining up to follow our lead around the world.”
While industry leaders have voiced support for less pollution, they are unsatisfied with this change of events because of its potential impact on both the industry and the nation’s economy. American Trucking Associations CEO and President Chris Spear said the following in a formal statement:
“The EPA is handing over the keys as a national regulator. This isn’t the United States of California, and in order to mollify a never satisfied fringe environmental lobby by allowing the state to proceed with these technologically infeasible rules on unworkable and unrealistic timelines, the EPA is sowing the ground for a future supply chain crisis.“
Conclusion
There are still approximately twelve years for this mandate to go into effect, but if it does, the Golden State is going to have to work hard to get the plan into motion by 2035. In 2022, only 2% of all new heavy-duty trucks sold within the state’s borders were electric. If California is going to meet its own standards, there will need to be a radical shift in the state’s entire economic system.
