Texas Border to Examine Every Truck
History does not repeat, but it very often rhymes.
You may remember a little over a year ago how the Texas Department of Transportation (TDOT) inspected every single truck that entered into the United States from Mexico. With Title 42 now at an end, TDOT is ramping up its inspections yet again.
Details
The Trump-era Title 42 was a mandate that offered stricter policies against illegal immigration as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Without it, it will make it harder for law enforcement to turn them away. By the time you read this article, barring a rare event that we cannot foresee, it should be lifted.
In direct response, U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) said that TDOT is poised to begin a return-to-form on examining every truck that enters its state from Mexico in order to curtail human and drug trafficking.
Indeed, TDOT has done just that, with estimates of a backlog wait time of over 24 hours.
Cuellar says that he is worried that it will be a repeat episode of what happened in April 2022, where three days of extensive inspections caused an estimated $1 billion in economic value.
Conclusion
The previous inspection blitz curbed when Governor Greg Abbott reached an agreement with Mexican governors to do pre-inspections before the trucks reached the border. In contrast, TDOT currently shows no signs of slowing down in its high-scrutiny inspections to fight illegal immigration and drug smuggling.
Our advice to you for the time being is, unless your business absolutely revolves around moving things in and out of Mexico, to avoid traveling to our southern neighbor altogether, unless you plan to enter via Arizona, California, or New Mexico. Considering the wait times are now longer than a full day, it may even make more sense to take a detour to an eastern state.
It is hard to say at the current time what the end result of this clash between federal and state governments will be.If any more news develops around this story at the Texas-Mexico border, we will be sure to let you know.
