ATRI Announces Research Projects for 2023
The American Transportation Research Institute (ARTI) is a nonprofit that conducts research to obtain information that may better the trucking industry. On May 5th, the ATRI’s board reviewed and approved research topics that ATRI’s Research Advisory Committee said needed observation. This is what they plan to study for the rest of 2023.
Truck Parking
With truck parking often being amongst the top spots, if not the top spot, for driver concerns, the ATRI wants to map truck driver needs to find the best places to suggest the placement of rest stops.
Female Trucker Recruitment
Despite comprising 50% of the population, 10% of truck drivers are women. ATRI plans to conduct research to find out additional ways to get more women in trucking.
Complete Streets and Freight Mobility
Complete Streets, a DOT program to make streets easier for pedestrians and cyclists to use, have been shown to negatively impact the flow of freight. ATRI wants to research ways to mitigate this problem and discover a solution that works for the good of all.
Diesel Technician Shortage
The trucking industry simply does not have enough diesel technicians to go around. From the ATRI’s own webpage, “This research will work with government and industry to identify the factors underlying the shortage, including mapping career attributes to workforce needs, and assessing high school-level vocational training availability, industry recruitment practices and competing career opportunities.”
Cost of Driver Detention
Surveyed truckers often cite waiting at customer facilities as the worst part of the job. ATRI hopes to research the problem to better understand how to minimize driver detention, which in turn should increase driver retention.
Conclusion
The ATRI often creates very useful studies that help truckers work more effectively in their everyday lives (such as with listing bottlenecks to avoid), so we wait with bated breath to see what the results of these studies may bring. If the ATRI can figure out a way to reduce the amount of time waiting at a customer facility, or increase the number of parking spots, both of which would give drivers more on-duty time each day for traveling on the road, we are all for it!
